Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary which was started to provide inmates a bank-like account for inmate funds and for buying things not issued to inmates by the facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone can send money to prisoner’s accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send prisoners money by way of the postal service and must send money to the following address and follow the steps shows below:

The deposit has to be in a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, during which the prisoner will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will send back any funds that do not have valid inmate information but only if the envelope has a return address. Personal checks and cash won’t be deposited to the inmate’s account so do not send checks or cash.
