Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary which was started to provide a bank-like account for inmate money and for purchasing things not issued to inmates by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone can deposit funds to prisoner’s accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send prisoners money through the mail and must send funds to the address below and do so in accordance with the policies listed below:

The deposit has to be in the form of a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold period, and during this hold period the inmate will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that don’t have appropriate inmate info but only if the envelope it was sent it has a valid return address. Checks and cash won’t be accepted so don’t send any checks or cash.
