Bail & Bail Bondsmen – How To Get Out of Jail
If you are incarcerated, your main thought is about getting out. After you’ve gone through the intake process, your bail will be determined either through a preset bail schedule or a magistrate. In cases where no bail is set this might mean that you will either be released on your ‘own recognizance’ until your court date, or you don’t get released while you wait for your court date.
If you do bail out of jail you will have to promise to show up for court, and until then you are not allowed to leave town.
Typically, an inmate in the Adams County Jail can earn time off for good behavior if they follow the rules and act right while incarcerated.
If you do exhibit good behavior and the jail believes you can be trusted, you may be allowed to participate in a work release program. Either you will have to stay the jail every day after work, or you might have the chance to move to a halfway house when you are not working.
Bail
Bail is money that you will be required to pay to get out of jail until your trial. The amount you will have to pay is dictated by the seriousness of your crime. You or someone you know will have to put up ten percent of the total that was determined so you are able to get out of jail. If you don’t go to your scheduled court date, the person that bailed you out of jail will lose that money.
Find Out How Much Someone’s Bail Is
To find out someone’s bail amount you must call the jail. If you’ve got the pertinent information, including name, address and date of birth, they’ll tell you the bail amount. You can also see the bail amount online.
How To Bail Someone Out of Jail
Posting bail to get out of jail is never fun, but fortunately, it is easy. To start with, you need to find out if it is a Cash Only Bond situation. If this is the case, you won’t be able to use the services of a bail bondsman. Cash only – they can’t accept a personal check. When you’ve paid bail, the prisoner will be discharged. If this person doesn’t violate any of the terms of their release, you’ll get your money back.
Bail Bondsman
If bail is set too high, or you just can’t afford to pay it, you might need to use a bail bondsman. Bail bondsmen usually charge you a fee of 10 to 15 percent of the total amount of bail set by the magistrate, and usually with a minimum of $100. The money you pay to the bail bondsman will not be returned to you and is typically cash only. If their bail has been set particularly high, the bail bondsman will in these cases require that they use assets as collateral in addition to the fee they charge.

Jail Policies and Procedures
Intake Procedures / Booking
The intake procedure takes you through these steps:
- You will get put in a holding cell. If the jail is really busy, it will take a while to get processed.
- The first thing you will have to is you must answer some simple questions, like your legal name, street address, date of birth and an emergency contact person.
- They’ll also ask you about your mental and medical history.
- You will be given an inmate ID.
- Your fingerprints will be taken.
- You will get your mugshot taken.
- All personal property will be taken from you and stored until you get released from jail.
- You will be allowed to use the phone in order to contact a member of your family, friend, or bail bondsman.
- If they expect that you will make bail and be released quickly, you will be allowed to skip the jumpsuit and keep wearing your own clothes, otherwise you will have to change into a jail jumpsuit.
Have you ever been arrested and gone through processing at jail? If so, please tell us how it happened. How long did you have to wait in the holding cell? Were you treated fairly? Do you know any tips that will help other people get through jail processing?

Discharge Procedures
When you finally post bail, you will be allowed to go home after you get discharged. This process can take anywhere from 15 minutes to quite a few hours. In simple terms, the faster you post bail, the faster you will get out of jail. How quickly you get discharged can depend on whether or not you have a cash bond or if the magistrate needs to decide on your bail amount. For lesser charges, you will simply be booked and released on your own recognizance. When you have served out your jail sentence and know the release date, you should expect to be discharged at any time that day – but usually in the morning.
How To Turn Yourself In
If the police have a, or if you have to start a jail sentence, it is highly recommended that you follow the law and go down to the jail and turn yourself in. If you have a warrant, go down to the jail, in the reception area, and tell them that believe that there could be a warrant out for your arrest. They will check their system to see if there are any outstanding local, state or federal arrest warrants out for you, and if they find one, you will be taken into the sheriff’s custody. If it is for a jail sentence, report to the jail at the exact time and date that the sentence order lists. Be sure that you aren’t late. Make sure that you only bring necessary items with you, for example a driver’s license or even ID, prescription medication, as well as a sentencing order.
Visitation Procedures
The inmate have to give information about each visitor to the jail in advance of the visit. Your visitor’s information will go into the visitation log for the requesting inmate. Every visitor has to provide acceptable photo identification when visiting an inmate. Anyone that arrives for visitation late or that is not on the visitation list will be turned away.
Visitation procedures can change, so we suggest that you double-check the jail site before you visit an inmate.
Visiting Hours
Phone Calls & Phone Usage Policy
All phone calls from jail are with a pre-paid phone card or account, or are collect calls . Phone calls made in jail are typically pricier than regular phone calls. Phone calls are restricted on when you can make phone calls, how long you can talk, and how often you can make calls, but you should keep in mind that there are a limited number of phones, so all the inmates must share phone time. If you are disciplined for an infraction, phone calls might get cut back or cut altogether.

Life In Jail / What Its Like
Daily Life
Just the thought of spending time in the Adams County jail is very scary, eventually you will get accustomed to the daily routine there. Inmates get an alarm for wake-up at about 6am, and next they’ll do roll call. You will then get breakfast. When you finish eating breakfast participate in the work program that you’ve been assigned to. This could be working in the kitchen, laundry, or some sort of manufacturing job. While this may seem tedious, it may help you when you leave jail, as you are gaining experience in a certain field of work. Other inmates go to school, while some take part in mandated treatment programs. After lunch, there will be another roll call, then back to work. Your evening will be spent either in your cell or a common room. During this time dinner is served and you will be expected to take a shower. After another roll call, it’s lights out. Even though you will be confined to your cell, there may be enough light to read or write letters. Then again, most inmates welcome lights out, and try to get as much sleep as they can.
Most people are frightened at the idea of jail because they don’t know what to expect. If you have spent any time in Adams County Jail, your experiences would be welcomed, if it can help another person to deal with it.
Dress Code
When incarcerated, all inmates are expected to wear the Adams County Jail uniform. This is normally a jumpsuit or scrubs. Of note to anyone visiting an inmate – you must be properly dressed. Any clothing considered inappropriate will not be permitted.
How To Send Money to an Inmate
You will have your own ‘bank account’ while in jail. This money is used to purchase items from the Commissary. Family and friends can deposit money into this account for you, and any money you earn while in prison will also be deposited into your account. Outside money can be paid in to your account via a money order, cash or check. If someone sends a check or money order, make sure that they write your inmate ID on it. The maximum amount you are allowed in your account is $290 per month.
The procedure to send funds to inmates at Adams County Jail changes, so you should double check the official Adams County Jail site before you send money to an inmate.
Commissary
The commissary is the jail store. You can purchase a number of things here, such as toiletries, snacks and writing supplies. Bear in mind that you will probably want to use the commissary daily, and any infractions will get that privilege taken away from you.
Inmate Medications
If you are on any type of prescription medication, you will be allowed to continue taking it while in jail. When you are first processed, you will be asked what medication you take. You will then be referred to the jail nurse or doctor who will be in charge of monitoring your health and prescribing your medication.
Meals
You will get three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. As expected, they are very basic, but healthy. A typical breakfast might be cereal, toast, coffee and fruit. Lunch might be spaghetti, salad, bread and milk. Dinner could be chicken casserole, rice, vegetables, dessert and milk. Contrary to popular belief, prison food has greatly improved over the years, and you might find that it’s not much different from what you would eat at home.
Pods / The Yard
The jail is designed in a ‘pod’ layout, with self-contained housing arranged around an outdoor yard. Each pod has a central control station and a common room, and the inmates take turns in using the yard. The jail is designed this way to keep certain inmates together, and others away from the general population.
Gangs
As with life in general, gangs are a part of prison life. Obviously it is best to avoid becoming a part of this environment as it will only lead to trouble. When you first enter prison, you might find yourself being ‘primed’ to join a gang, or worse, you might get their attention in a negative way. The best thing to do is keep your head down and don’t get involved.
