Inmate Money

Every prison has a Commissary that serves to provide a bank type account for inmate funds and for buying things not issued by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can deposit funds into these Commissary accounts by sending it by Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send prisoners money in the mail and will have to send those funds to the following address and follow the rules written below:

The funds have to be in the form of a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold, and during this hold period the prisoner will not have access to the money. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender funds that don’t have correct inmate information if the envelope has a valid return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be deposited to the inmate’s account so do not send any cash or checks.
