Inmate Money

Every prison has a Commissary which was created to provide prisoners a bank account for prisoner money and for buying things not issued regularly by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can add money to these accounts with the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send prisoners money in postal mail and will have to send those funds to the address below and do so in accordance with the directions given below:

The funds must be a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day holding period, in which the prisoner will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back any funds that don’t have appropriate inmate info if the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Cash and personal checks cannot be accepted for deposit so do not send cash or checks.
