Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary that was created to provide prisoners a bank account for prisoner funds and for buying things not issued by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can add funds to inmate’s Commissary accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send inmates money through postal mail and must send those funds to the following address and follow the directions shows below:

The money has to be in a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day hold period, and in this time the prisoner will not have access to the deposit. The Bureau of Prisons will return funds that don’t have valid prisoner information but only if the envelope you sent it in has a return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be deposited so don’t send any cash or checks.
